Tech Tips : How To Protect Your Domain Name

1. Register Your Domain Name Independently To Yourself
It is not advisable to register a third party as the administrative contact for your domain name. The administrative contact has the power to transfer, terminate or make changes to your domain ownership. As such, list yourself, the organization, or someone you trust as your administrative contact. It is not too late to make changes to your domain name administrative contact if you wish to make changes now.

2. Keep Your Contact Details Complete, Correct and Up-To-Date
Notifications are sent whenever the expiration date, registrar, or status of a domain changes. These notifications are usually sent via email to the billing contact and the administrative contact associated with the domain name. Ensure that the contact email addresses provided are valid and check your email at these addresses often. To do a WHOIS look up, log on to http://whois.integricity.com

3. One May Not Be Enough
Sometimes, it may not be a bad idea to register variations of your domain name. Once someone else owns a particular domain name, it may be impossible (or very expensive) to obtain it. Remember to point these domain names to your existing website.

4. Do Not Miss Renewing Your Domain Names
Act on domain name renewal notifications and keep a record of your expiration dates.

5. Renew In Advance for Peace of Mind
Why worry about year-to-year payment and risk missing renewal notifications? You have the option to renew your domain name up to 10 years!

  • Maximum registration or renewal duration is 10 years for top-level domains (TLD) such as .com, .net, .biz
  • Maximum registration or renewal duration is 3 years for .my

Tried and Tested : Use Your Astro Decoder to Read Your MyKad Details

If you are a subscriber of Astro, you’re in luck. Did you know your Astro decoder can be used as a smart card reader? The second slot of any Astro decoder is able to display the basic information in any MyKad as well information from Credit Cards.

To check the details embedded in your smartcard, switch to channel 800. Insert your smart card into the second card slot of your decoder (the chip goes in first) and follow the instructions on the screen.

Although it displays the obvious information printed on the MyKad (the additional information which you will see is race and religion), it is still a good way to verify if your MyKad is genuine.

The People behind Integricity : Alex, Jek and Olivia on Wedding Preparations

We thought you might like to get to us a little more. This 2006, we've got two grooms and a bride fanatically preparing for their wedding. Meet the grooms : Alex (Managing Director) and Jek (Operations Director), and the bride : Olivia (Senior Strategist, Interactive Design). Fanatical Voices quizzes all three on the fuss about bridal matters.

Alex, Olivia and Jek on the Red Sofa

What's the most fanatical thing which you've done in preparation for your wedding?
Olivia : Jek was going to Bangkok and offered to bring back a box of candles for me. He went the extra mile and did the bargaining for me (thanks again Jek!). Other than that, it is the bottle of whiskey we purchased in my husband’s hometown. It is a whooping 4.5 litre bottle!

That is a huge bottle of whiskey. How about yourself, Jek?
Jek : I purchased tickets to Bangkok for my fiancée’s family to go crazy on shopping - to purchase the items and clothing required for the wedding. There were times when I was manipulated to pay for these items. The heart was and is willing because I love my fiancée’s family but my pockets sing another song. So if you are asking me out for a drink, you better be buying because I am broke now.

Alex, we heard that you trekked all the way to Bangkok and carted back a thousand bottles. Tell us more about your adventure.
Alex : Well... sorting out a wedding and juggling house renovations is a mighty expensive exercise. So, we decided to go for something reasonable and interesting.

While we were in Bangkok to get the suits and gowns made, we visited Jatujak Market - a huge marketplace housing an assortment of things ranging from food to clothes to plants and even dogs!

We were trying to get inspiration while walking around and we chanced upon a store selling lab equipment. They had test tubes of all sizes and vials that can be used to store your potions. Eventually, we decided to buy small bottles and fill them with an assortment of spices and have a tag that says, "Thanks for being the spice of our lives".

So, yes, you are right - we DID cart back 1,008 bottles which we have now filled with spices.

What's the theme for your wedding?
Olivia : We don’t have a specific theme and I’m not making my guests comply to any theme. The wedding is going to be during the day, so everyone will be free to mingle and just relax.

Jek : Simple, elegant, clean, no unnecessary formalities… an "enjoyable wedding". We are trying to cut out formalities or things that will make people uneasy.

Alex : Grace (my fiancée) and I have decided that we'll only get married once in our lifetimes. As such, we want it to be a memorable occasion. Our concept is "A Wedding To Remember". We're quite detailed about what we want, and how to execute the wedding plans.

Excellent. How's the hunt for the perfect wedding dress and tuxedo?
Olivia : My husband and I went to a couple of bridal houses in SS2. Rental was costly, starting from RM800 for bridal gowns and RM850 for men’s suits. I did try a few bridal gowns but I was itching to get out of it. There was too much fabric, too much lace, too much of everything. Some of the gowns probably weighed MORE than me! We then decided that I should tailor-make two “qipaos” (“also known as the “cheongsam”) and my husband would buy a suit off the rack.

Jek : I don’t intend to try anything too adventurous with my wedding attire. I guess it is easier for a guy - you can’t go very wrong. A tux is a tux and suit is a suit. It’s more about choosing the right colour and fabric. I have got my wedding attire sorted out. My fiancée has tailor-made an evening gown but she is still hunting for the wedding gown. She knows very clearly what she wants but has yet to find someone that can make it happen.

Alex : To sum it up, very expensive. So, we scouted around a fair bit to look for the best deals. Rental is about RM800 and above in KL, while in Malacca it goes for about RM400 and above. Plus they're all too long for Grace (made for 10 feet women, she says!) and they will not allow you to alter / pin-up the dress. Buying the gown costs in excess of RM1,200 in Malaysia.

Eventually, we bought a bridal gown in Bangkok. It was off the rack, and it seemed to be the perfect fit as the length was just right. Minor modifications were done on size. The cost? RM900.

For me, I made a suit at one of their 30 gazillion tailors and had it done within 3 days at a cost of RM600. A recommendation to all is to not rush to have it made within 24 hours, though many can do it. Go for several fittings, and leave sufficient time for adjustments.

Do you have a wedding website or blog to help you plan and organize your wedding?
Olivia : I don’t have a wedding blog, but from time to time I do blog about my wedding preparation and include some photos as sneak peaks for my readers. Some friends offered to design our wedding website. Which reminds me, I have to prepare the content for the website…

Jek : It is nice to be a client to Integricity every now and then. My fiancée and I have left quite a few critical tasks in the capable hands of the Integricity Interactive Team. Among them are my wedding website and wedding cards. I’ve seen the drafts, they are doing a superb job! The website should be completed very soon.

What about you, Alex? We heard that you’ve got your website up and running.
Alex : Using Integricity's WebToolz Wedding Limited Edition, we set up a website to keep others informed about the bridal happenings as well as help manage our RSVPs. It contains the usual information, PLUS, lots of stories that would be of interest to our closer friends and relatives.

We have still not announced it to the general public, but will do so soon. Initial feedback has been good, and we think it's a great tool that couples can use to be more organized in their planning, and constantly let others be abreast of what is going on.

Finally, any tips for our readers?
Jek : Wedding planning is NOT a nightmare. It just needs to be managed. I have assisted in planning and executing quite a few weddings. Most have been very easy and some have been extremely difficult. Looking back at the difficult weddings, I find that the biggest problem is that the goals were not clearly defined and key responsibilities were not delegated. I believe that separating responsibilities and portfolios are extremely important.

If you love someone and their family enough, you will trust them to have full control of their portfolio (*cough* mumbles… as long as it is within the budget). Even if something is not quite to your liking, they might absolutely love it. It is likely that you have made a few decisions which were also not to their liking. Assign all the important people portfolios and trust them to make the right decision. Delegate and project manage. I have delegated a lot of work and so far everything is looking good. Hmmm… perhaps I should only judge my success after the wedding. Having said that, I am confident that my wedding committee with come through for us in fine style.

Olivia : Surf the internet. You can get a lot of ideas from the net. Talk to friends, and you may get more ideas. Work within your budget and try not to go overboard with everything. Do what your heart tells you to, and not what other people think you should do. It’s a norm for most couples to have minor disagreements from time to time because everyone has different ideas. Just kiss and make up - everything will be fine. Most importantly, have fun!

Alex : If you are able to computerize and harness the power of Microsoft Excel and the Internet, use it to its fullest potential. It will reduce a lot of tedious manual labor. If you can't, then stick with what you have (Grace's father laboriously typed his portion of the guest list with his trusty typewriter from the 60s). Also, importantly - don't get stressed and do things with high levels of pressure. Keep a calm head and enjoy all the preparations.

Thanks a lot for chatting. Once again, congratulations to the three of you. Good luck with the wedding and marriage!
